FAQ PAGE

WHAT IF I AM IN AN EMERGENCY SITUATION AND NEED HELP?

Be aware that Three Rivers does not have 24 hour hotline so make sure to call 9-1-1 in case of an emergency.  You can also use the national suicide crisis hotline at 9-8-8.   There are also local  crisis hotlines: COPE (612-596-1223) or for children, Child Crisis (612-348-2233).

WHAT IF I AM UNSURE WHERE I STAND SPIRITUALLY?
It is important that clients feel comfortable and respected, no matter their situation. For clients who are uncomfortable with discussing spiritual matters or not sure where they stand in their faith, please know meeting you where you are at is an essential part of the counseling process and we know that.
FINANCIAL CONSIDERATIONS
Each session is $120, and is 60 minutes.  A sliding scale is available for those who need it.
At this time, Three Rivers Counseling does not bill for insurance. However, we can provide documentation that will allow you to pursue reimbursement with your insurance company. We cannot guarantee any payment; clients are responsible for communicating and coordinating with their insurance company.
There are certain benefits to seeking help from a private pay therapist versus filing with your insurance company.  Any information regarding your therapy and diagnosis is confidential and not part of your permanent medical record.  In addition, some insurance companies have limits on the number of sessions they will provide payment for.  You may find that you need more sessions than your insurance company is willing to cover.
WHAT HAPPENS THE FIRST TIME WE MEET?
Choosing a counselor is a very personal decision so in the first visit, please take the opportunity to ask whatever questions you might have. You will be given some paperwork to fill out which will help us ascertain how best to come alongside you and offer you support and guidance.

The first visit includes going over the paperwork and understanding your goals.  Three Rivers combines a variety of approaches in order to tailor your therapy to your needs.
WHAT SHOULD I BRING ON THE FIRST DAY?
On your first visit, I will ask you to turn in some preliminary paperwork online that provides information that is required before I can serve you, as well as help me meet your needs as best I can.

All clients should read the HIPPA Form. This gives you more information on your rights as a client.

Submitting Documents Online:

Documents are available to submit online.  Please Contact Three Rivers Counseling to receive log in information in order to do so. Once an account set up, you can submit the intake forms, pay invoices, and track your appointments here.

HOW CAN I SUPPORT MY TEEN IN THE COUNSELING PROCESS?
Counseling can be intimidating, especially for teens.  In the first session, my goal is to build a connection between myself and your child.  Assure your teen that the first session is not meant to be intense.  I will be interested in hearing about their hobbies, interests, favorite movies, music tastes, and so on.   Counseling is a process that requires a trusting relationship between client and counselor.  The process cannot be rushed: it may take a few sessions for your child to begin discussing more personal matters.

Be patient with the counseling process and do not pressure your child to reveal anything about themselves that they are not prepared to share.  You will be encouraged to sign a “Safe Harbor” agreement, which stipulates that you waive your right to have information shared in the session, outside of safety concerns.  Parents join in during the first session, but typically teens are seen alone after that point, unless they request you to be present.

Sometimes it’s hard for younger clients to have one-on-one conversations with someone new so I have a variety of activities that can take the pressure off while in the counseling process; such as coloring, games, puzzles, and listening to music.   Some of my teen clients have brought in music they have written, poetry, books, and songs that have specific meaning, which opens the door to more dialogue.

WHAT IS EMDR?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.  It was originally created to help clients who had experienced severe trauma, but is now becoming more widely used.  EMDR allows a client to focus on disturbing memories and reprocess them, using bilateral stimulation.  Not all clients are good candidates for this treatment, so you and I will discuss if this is the right path for you.  EMDR has shown amazing results, and is quickly becoming a popular tool in the healing process.
